SADEEPA, SHELINDA SHINE FOR GATEWAY

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Sprinters Sadeepa Henderson and Shelinda Jansen of Gateway College, Colombo dazzled the track with record breaking performances in the 19th International School Athletic Championship (ISAC) continued for the day two at Sugathadasa stadium on saturday .

Jansen, who created a new wave in Athletics last year with her mesmerizing run in the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, gave a glimpse of that run again yesterday when she clocked 24.83 seconds, her best time in Sri Lanka. The 18 year old was fast out of the block and ran her signature bullet phase run in the bend where she was so far ahead when she came to the straight and it’s racing against wind from then onwards. In doing so she erased the Under-20 200M record of 25.29 seconds set by her schoolmate Sharmila Jan.

Meanwhile, Sadeepa shone with two individual gold medals within the day as she leapt a record breaking distance in the Long Jump before sprinting to win the Girls’ Under-18 200M. The youngster, who is set to represent Sri Lanka in the forthcoming Asian Youth Championship, leapt 5.40M in the Under-18 Girls’ Long Jump, bettering her own record of 5.32M set last year. Soon she was back to the track for the 200M, which she also won with a time of 25.41 seconds.

The day commenced with the ceremonial opening of the competition. Managing Director of Gateway College, Rohini Alles and Executive Director of the Ceylon Newspapers, Ramantha Alles escorted the Principals and Directors of all 25 participant schools. The events for the day began at 9.00 a.m. with extravagant performances on the track and field.

The final series of events of the day, the 4 x 100M was one of the main highlights of the evening. A consistent number of wins were registered by the teams of Gateway College Colombo (GCC), Lyceum International School Wattala (LISW) and Lyceum International School Panadura (LISP) in both the Boys’ and Girls’ categories.

Lyceum International School Wattala broadened their lead with 22 gold medals, 17 silver medals and 10 bronze medals, summing up a total of 49 medals.
